Closing Date Wednesday 05 Aug 2020

Time commitment: c.2-3 days per month
A new Chair is sought for London Marathon Events Ltd (LME), the world-leading events company which organises thirteen world class mass participation events every year including the London Marathon, the world’s greatest marathon and the biggest one-day annual fundraising event on the planet.
This is a pivotal moment in LME’s history as the relationship between LME and its parent charity and sole shareholder The London Marathon Charitable Trust (The Trust) is redefined and strengthened.
When Chris Brasher and John Disley created the London Marathon in 1981, their vision was to inspire people to become active and to generate funds to provide grants for sports and recreational facilities. Each year, LME passes it surplus to The Trust through corporate gift aid. Forty years on, the two organisations share a vision of Inspiring Activity and work to inspire activity in all ages and demographics across the UK.
LME has grown into a £38 million business and an extraordinary force for good. Its portfolio of running, cycling and swimming events together with its community initiatives aim to engage with and inspire people from the broadest possible range of abilities and backgrounds. It is the acknowledged world leader in maximising revenue for charities through mass participation events and to date its events and participants have raised more than £1 billion for thousands of charities.
The Covid-19 crisis has had a significant impact on the organisation with the London Marathon postponed for the first time in its history and other events postponed or cancelled.
The new LME Chair will play a key role in shaping and delivering planned governance changes as well as working with board colleagues and senior executives to develop and deliver the future strategic objectives of LME.
The new Chair will also serve as a member of The Trust board (subject to Charity Commission approval) and is responsible for reporting to The Trust on behalf of LME.
For this critical role we are looking for someone with a real passion for and commitment to inspiring activity, the ability to energise and engage a diverse range of audiences, and to hold in balance the commercial and social goals of this unique organisation. The role requires someone with vision, and strategic and change leadership credentials, as well as proven commercial acumen. Diversity of thought and action together with a proven record in diversity and inclusion is ideal. An exceptional understanding of good governance will be important, as will prior experience as a non-executive and ideally as a board Chair.
LME and The Trust are committed to diversity and inclusion and welcome applications from people from the broadest possible range of backgrounds.
The role is remunerated and the time commitment is expected to be around 2-3 days a month on average.
