Queen Mary University of London

Professor and Director of Precision Healthcare University Research Institute

Job Reference WABKE
Closing Date Monday 04 Apr 2022

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Our work, achievements and beliefs show that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.  With two vibrant east London campuses in Mile End and Whitechapel and a student population of over 30,000 from 170 nationalities, Queen Mary is proud to be recognised as the most inclusive Russell Group University in the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021. Queen Mary focusses on collegial learning, world-leading research, and innovation.

The Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (URI) is Queen Mary’s second URI, established as part of the University’s ambitious Strategy 2030.  The Precision Healthcare URI will be housed in a bespoke facility offering a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary centre of excellence to enable scientific breakthroughs that will transform lives across Queen Mary’s richly diverse community of some 2.5 million people.  The URI will produce ground-breaking research within four broad pillars of health data and analytics, integrated diagnostic genomics, medical technology and therapeutic innovation.

This is a significant opportunity to shape, develop and grow the URI from an early stage.  The URI is not part of any individual faculty, and is truly cross-institutional in form, enabling streamlined interdisciplinary working. The Director will produce and create a culture that delivers world-leading research supported by world-class facilities.  The Director will build upon industry partnerships and engage in strategic collaborations with healthcare partners, NHS trusts and agencies – putting the overall success of the URI at the forefront of everything they do. This role will be underpinned by a substantive, permanent Professorial appointment.

The successful candidate will have the ability to drive world-leading, multi-disciplinary research, a track record of success in complex, multi-partner research leadership and an international profile in their field. Collaborative in nature, good candidates will be able to engage with others across various disciplines, and ideally bring experience of exploiting IP and research commercialisation. Demonstrable ability to secure large research grants on a sustained basis is essential.
