The Charterhouse

Chair

Job Reference UBNDA
Closing Date Monday 11 Mar 2024

The Charterhouse is the site of a historic former Carthusian monastery, located between Barbican and Smithfield Market, dissolved in the 16th century and now a registered charity and almshouse. Blessed with exceptional historic buildings, as well as finely tended gardens, the Charterhouse includes an “infirmary” registered as a care home, a chapel which functions daily, and a significant investment portfolio, which also provides a share of investment income each year to its sister charity, Charterhouse School in Godalming, which is used for bursaries.

Our current Chair completes their term of service this Autumn, and we are seeking the right leader for our Governing body, who will be joining the Charterhouse at a very exciting stage. We have recently refreshed our strategy, as an important Central London location, for the care of older people, amongst an important heritage site, which combines events space, a learning centre, a chapel, a museum, and shop.

The successful candidate will build on the work already done and will be instrumental in ensuring we are most effectively living our charitable purpose, with strong governance and ambition, maintaining the charity’s objectives to provide supported living for older people, maintaining a historic site and supporting Charterhouse School.

The Governing body is seeking a candidate able to carry the trust and respect of the Charterhouse community, and with the personal qualities and dedication to lead it forward. They will play a crucial and central leadership role in the Charterhouse, and will align with the values which underpin our strategy.
