Job Title: Director of UCL Policy Lab

Job Reference:WAYUJ

Closing Date: Monday 14 Jun 2021

University College London (UCL) is London’s leading multidisciplinary university, with more than 14,500 staff and 48,000 students from over 150 countries. UCL was recently ranked 10th the 2021 QS World University Rankings, recognising its position as a global leader in teaching and one of the most successful research institutions in the world.

The UCL Policy Lab is a new strategic initiative that will connect UCL’s world-class research from the Departments of Economics and Political Science with the policy making community in the UK and internationally. The Lab will facilitate disruptive thinking and global impact for UCL’s research in these fields, addressing major global challenges through a programme of public and policy engagement and the integration of cutting-edge research in a suite of new educational outreach and activity.

The Policy Lab will become one of the top ‘go-to’ places for policy makers, researchers, and public, private and third-sector leaders who are seeking to access research and join curated debates that tackle complex policy challenges. Based in London’s knowledge quarter, in newly refurbished premises at 36-38 Gordon Square in Bloomsbury, the Lab is close to the heart of UK government at Westminster, the City, and other political and economic hubs.

UCL is seeking to appoint a visionary and high-profile candidate to take on the role of Director of UCL’s Policy Lab. As the founding Director, this role provides a rare opportunity to refine the mission and strategy for the Lab and spearhead its creation. The Director will bring strong entrepreneurial skills and senior policy experience either from government, think tanks, media, NGOs or the private sector. Whatever sector experience the new Director brings, s/he will be passionate about evidence and research-based policy and keen to engage with academics to turn research into impact. The successful candidate will also be equipped with a strong network in policy making, media and donor communities to enhance the impact and reputation of UCL and the Departments of Economics and Political Science.

This is a significant opportunity to lead a centre of excellence within one of the world’s finest academic institutions. Where appropriate a Professorial appointment to either the Department of Political Science or the Department of Economics will accompany the Directorship.
