Foundling Museum

Chair

Job Reference PARARC
Closing Date Wednesday 27 Mar 2024

Inspired by three great 18th century activists – Thomas Coram, William Hogarth and George Frideric Handel – the Foundling Museum is a force for change. We believe in creative action that brings past and present together, to stimulate imaginations and enrich young lives. We celebrate the work of artists and inspire people to take positive action that transforms lives and creates a lasting impact. Our exhibitions, commissions and creative projects generate new understandings of art and social history and tackle social issues to highlight the continuing relevance of our historic story. Collection displays combine historic art and objects from the Founding Hospital Collection and the Gerald Coke Handel Collection, with contemporary work. Temporary exhibitions, collection interventions and projects enable diverse voices to challenge historical narratives, particularly in relation to histories traditionally excluded from the mainstream.

With the recent appointment of an ambitious new Museum Director, Emma Ridgway, the Foundling Museum now seeks candidates for the role of Chair. The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the Museum’s mission and vision, providing strategic leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. They will also provide support and appropriate challenge for the Museum Director, working in close partnership as an ambassador and advocate for the Museum.

The successful candidate will bring a passion for the arts, and a strong track record of strategic leadership, including previous experience of chairing a charity board, and fundraising ability. They will bring a commitment for the transformative nature of the arts and a natural ability to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders, including world class contemporary artists. They will understand the complexity and diversity of the cultural climate, and the economic challenges it is faced with. Most importantly, they will have a deep empathy and passion for the specific work done by the Foundling Museum in supporting young people.
